Kitchen Care & Maintenance Guide for Clients
Everyday care and use, designed to protect your kitchen
Sophie Lyons – Senior Designer
Designing a kitchen is one part of the process. Living with it over time is where the real value shows.
At Kitchens By Nick McNally, it’s often not the big decisions that make the biggest difference, but the smaller details - how materials behave, how finishes wear, and how appliances are used day to day.
These details shape how a kitchen looks and performs over time.
Here are some of the key areas we regularly discuss with clients once a Kitchens By Nick McNally kitchen is installed.
Pyrolytic Ovens: How They Work and What to Expect
Pyrolytic cleaning is one of the most useful features in modern ovens, though it’s often misunderstood or underused.
Ovens from brands such as Miele, Siemens and Neff use very high temperatures to break down grease and residue into ash, which can then be easily wiped away.
Some models allow pyro-safe shelves and runners to remain in place, while others require removal - this depends on the specific appliance, so it’s worth checking the manufacturer’s guidance.
In practice, we advise:
Remove any non pyro-safe accessories
Clear heavier debris
Wipe down the inner glass beforehand
Use the function occasionally
Used correctly, it’s a simple and effective way to maintain a consistently clean oven.
Quooker Taps: Servicing & Natural Patina
Quooker taps are a considered feature across Kitchens By Nick McNally projects, complementing kitchens of every style while offering everyday convenience and efficiency.
From a practical perspective, they are relatively low maintenance, but not entirely maintenance-free, and a small amount of ongoing care will help ensure they continue to perform at their best.
Filter & Servicing
Depending on the model, Quooker systems may include filters (particularly for scale control or water quality), which will need replacing periodically - typically every 6–12 months, depending on usage and local water hardness.
At Kitchens By Nick McNally, we always recommend factoring this into your ongoing kitchen care routine, especially in hard water areas where maintenance is more important. Replacement filters can be purchased directly from the Quooker online shop.
Patinated Brass finishes
Quooker’s Patinated Brass is intentionally designed to age, developing depth and character over time rather than remaining uniform.
As the tap is used, the finish will naturally:
Develop subtle variations in tone, with darker and lighter areas
Respond to touch points and patterns of everyday use
Build a rich, living patina unique to each kitchen
This is not wear, but a considered and desirable part of the material’s appeal.
For clients choosing Patinated Brass Quooker taps, we always explain that the finish will continue to evolve gradually, becoming softer and more characterful with age. Over time, this creates a surface that reflects how the kitchen is used.
For those who prefer a more controlled or consistent finish, a light application of beeswax polish can be used occasionally to help protect the surface and gently slow the ageing process, while still allowing the tap to develop its natural patina over time.
Bora Extraction: Recirculation & Filters
Bora hobs and extraction systems are another feature we frequently incorporate into Kitchens By Nick McNally kitchens.
When these systems are installed in recirculation mode (rather than externally vented), filtration becomes an important consideration.
What to expect:
Recirculating Bora systems use charcoal filters to remove odours
These filters will need replacing over time
Replacement is typically required every 6–12 months, depending on usage
If filters aren’t changed, performance will gradually reduce — something we always highlight during the design stage
Bora systems offer clean integration and excellent performance, but like most elements of a well-designed kitchen, they perform best when properly maintained. Replacement filters can be purchased directly from the Bora online shop.
Composite Sinks: Built to Last, Simple to Maintain
Composite sinks continue to be widely specified across Kitchens By Nick McNally projects, particularly options such as Blanco Silgranit and Caple Geotech Granite sinks, thanks to their balance of durability, practicality and refined appearance.
Both materials are designed to withstand the demands of everyday use, offering strong resistance to scratching, staining and heat, while maintaining a consistent, high-quality finish that suits a wide range of kitchen styles.
Day-to-day maintenance is straightforward and requires only a small amount of regular care:
Clean regularly with warm water and a mild detergent
Dry the surface after use to minimise limescale build-up
Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaning products that may dull the finish
For general upkeep, a soft cloth or sponge is all that’s needed, and occasional deeper cleaning can help maintain the sink’s original appearance.
At Kitchens By Nick McNally, we often explain that most marks seen on composite sinks are not permanent stains, but limescale deposits from water. These can usually be removed with appropriate cleaning products, restoring the sink to its original finish and keeping it looking its best over time.
Door Finishes: Form, Function & Longevity
One of the biggest factors in how a kitchen looks over time is the door finish. At Kitchens By Nick McNally, we guide clients not just on initial appearance, but on how each finish performs with everyday use.
Lacquered Finishes
A clean, refined option. Clean with a soft cloth and mild solution, avoiding abrasives. They can show fingerprints, especially in darker tones, and care should be taken to avoid knocks as chipping can occur. A touch-up kit is provided for minor repairs.
Melamine Edged Doors
A versatile, low-maintenance option with a consistent finish. Durable for everyday use, though edges should be protected from prolonged moisture.
Oiled Timber Finishes
Natural and characterful, designed to evolve over time. Require occasional re-oiling and gentle cleaning with wood-safe products.
Stained Timber Finishes
Offer a more consistent appearance while retaining natural grain. Maintain similarly to other timber finishes, avoiding harsh cleaners and excess moisture.
Sachsenküchen Linoleum
A soft-touch, ultra-matt material used in contemporary designs. Naturally resistant to fingerprints and highly durable. Clean with a soft cloth and mild solution; occasional conditioning with specialist linoleum or linseed-based protectors helps maintain and preserve its appearance over time.
Worktops: Engineered for Durability, Designed for Care
Worktops are one of the hardest working elements in any Kitchens By Nick McNally kitchen, and their long-term performance depends on both the material selected and how they are used and cared for day to day.
Materials such as quartz, granite and porcelain are highly durable and relatively low maintenance, which makes them a popular choice across many projects. However, they still benefit from sensible, consistent use. Avoid cutting directly on the surface, take care around edges and corners, and always use heat protection where required—these materials can still chip, crack or scratch if subjected to impact, heavy use or sudden changes in temperature.
For everyday cleaning, warm water and a mild detergent is usually sufficient to keep surfaces looking their best. A soft cloth or sponge is ideal, and it’s best to avoid harsh or highly abrasive cleaners as part of regular use. For more stubborn marks, products such as Bar Keeper’s Friend can be used with care, always following manufacturer guidance to avoid dulling or damaging the finish.
Timber Worktops
Timber worktops bring warmth and natural character to a kitchen, offering a softer, more organic feel. However, they do require a more considered level of care. As a natural material, timber will respond to moisture and temperature, so regular cleaning, prompt removal of standing water, and periodic re-oiling are all important. This helps protect the surface, prevent drying, movement or staining, and maintain both its appearance and durability over time.
The Takeaway
A well-designed kitchen should continue to work just as well years after installation as it does on day one.
At Kitchens By Nick McNally, that’s always the focus, designing kitchens that not only look considered, but continue to perform over time.
From Miele, Siemens and Neff pyrolytic ovens, through to Quooker taps, Bora extraction systems, and Blanco Silgranit and Caple granite sinks, the key is understanding how each element behaves in everyday use.
It’s rarely about high maintenance, it’s about the right maintenance, applied consistently.
And ultimately, that’s what allows a Kitchens By Nick McNally kitchen to hold its quality for years to come.
If you have any questions around care and maintenance, the team at Kitchens By Nick McNally is always on hand and happy to help.
